I think I have lost a bank account. Where do I go?

Q. I was listening to your radio show and missed the name of the website for lost bank accounts. I’ve changed addresses a few times and positive I have some money sitting somewhere!

Josie’s answer: The website I was referring to is www.fido.gov.au. To make it easier, the following link gets you straight there -

http://www.fido.gov.au/fido/fido.nsf/byheadline/Unclaimed+money+-+search+for+money?openDocument.

Currently there is around $227M representing around 167,000 lost accounts. It is incredible that people forget they have money sitting bank accounts.

I would assume that some of them could relate to deceased estates, so this is a pretty good excuse for losing a bank account. Apparently there is one bank account which has $428k and don’t you wish it was yours. Good on you for taking steps to organise your financial life.
